PAVERS – AR reporting service for broken facilities to make safe sidewalks

‘Pavers’ is an AR app to give complaints on sidewalks and settle them in Seoul city, Korea. After reporters put a virtual barricade on a damaged facility, officials find the place with it and check the condition there.

On the pavement, there are many dangerous facilities such as broken sidewalk blocks, braille blocks that did not meet specifications, too short bollards, or damaged manhole covers, etc. Since they can threaten the safety of pedestrians including the transportation vulnerable, we need to report such facilities on finding them. However, due to the complex reporting process, it is hard to give a complaint right away. Reporters have to send plenty of information by themselves. Also, officials are spending time seeking the exact location only with an address.

We suggest ‘Pavers’ to make this experience more efficient and satisfactory with AR technology, which makes it possible to place and find virtual pins on real sidewalks. This service consists of two different apps. One is for reporters, and the other is for the officials in charge of the district.

All reporters need to do is scanning the broken area and checking the location on the map. The type of facility is auto-identified by the pavers app. The image and location are recorded at once, and making a description is optional. After that, an AR barricade is put on the broken facility.

‘Pavers’ also provides in-line feedback. Reporters can receive a notification for all the repairing progress (make a report – be checked by an official – initiate a repair – complete a repair). If the reporter is about to pass by the previously reported spot after repairing, the app notifies them. Users can find the exact spot with the AR barricade. After that, the barricade collapses, and the shine effect appears, providing gratifying feedback with a reward based on the level of participation.

We wanted to design a simple, easy, and fun reporting service to effectively connect citizen and district offices. To learn the pain point of the existing reporting service, we tried to make a report using the existing app. Based on that experience, we drew journey maps of reporters and civil servants. For reporters, it was complicated processes, unclear reporting categories that made them confused. Also, there was no feedback after a repair is done, making them unfulfilled. The officers were unsatisfied too because of the difficulty of seeking the exact point and the cumbersome process of sending feedback repeatedly.

With Pavers, the reporting process becomes much simpler than the traditional method of typing the information one by one. Also, the experience of sticking AR barricades on the reporting area comes as an interesting experience for users that cannot be felt in the existing reporting process. Pavers is a service designed to create a better world through AR technology, which is quite limited for non-entertaining use. Pavers can encourage citizens to actively report broken facilities on the pavement. It can also keep everyone safe by making more people redefine dangerous facilities.
