Overview

Kheti matches farmers and lenders on a digital P2P platform, hence enabling the farmers to get easy, quick anytime loans.

But much more importantly, it establishes a system in which farmers can repay loans easily, maximise their profit and recover in case of calamities.

Project Description

India has 126 million small and marginal farmers that do not have access to formal credit.

60% of total credit is still coming from Sahukars, the local moneylenders who exploit farmers in various ways. This financial and social oppression results in farmers getting stuck in years of debt cycle.

There have been government interventions from time to time but situation remains grim at the ground level due to various reasons.

My solution, Kheti, is a credit system that feels safe and reliable like formal systems (Banks) but at the same time it is quick and accessible like informal systems.

Kheti matches farmers and lenders on a digital P2P platform, hence enabling the farmers to get easy, quick anytime loans.

But more importantly it establishes a system in which farmers can repay loans easily, maximise their profit and recover in case of calamities.

Unlike other solutions existing in similar space, Kheti addresses challenges involved in all parts of the credit cycle.

During development of this project, I did ground level research and connected with small and marginal farmers on ground level. I also collaborated with various subject matter experts (people from RBI, NABARD, FPOs) to understand the current system and later to validate the solution.

The problem of lack of formal credit is present across agriculture and its allied sectors in India like Sericulture, fisheries etc. Hence, if adopted impact of this model will be huge.
