Remind – Music for Memory

For me, this selection was about the future, right? It's about where I hope interaction design will go. And the promise here is always, for me, about interdisciplinarity, about telling a story, about our capacity to imagine what the world might be, not what the world is. And this selection, for me, reflects all of those things. So for me, this was recipient exemplifies some of the things that I think are really important about where we're moving as a community.

Nike's training program-SPARQ Combines-are the proving ground for elite high school football players, an event where the very best attract the interest of college scouts. Based on the core athletic criteria of Speed, Power, Agility, Reaction, and Quickness, the SPARQ Combine event is where players are tested, analyzed, and ultimately for the elite few, awarded scholarships. But up until recently, the drill events were only about the numbers they could put up on a stopwatch. Nike asked us to bring SPARQ to the modern age. This year, through digital diagnostic tools, high school players now have a complete picture of their performance and a plan for improvement.

Nail art has exploded into mainstream demand due to social sharing – its one of the top 5 most shared items on Instagram and Pinterest with 8.5 billion dollars a year spent on nails. Yet keeping up with this trend can challenging. A basic salon manicure averages $20, but custom art on each finger can cost more than $50. DIY techniques are cheaper but they’re messy and require lots of skill, materials, and steady hands. Off-the-shelf nail wraps offer convenience but they eliminate the opportunity for creative self expression. So for most women, personalized nail art is an aspiration rather than reality – until now.

Inspiration doesn't always come when sitting in front of a computer screen. Sketchbooks are great for capturing ideas, but not so much for sampling a color. Kuler wanted to address this by giving people a tool they could use 'out in the field' for sampling, creating and editing color themes. Having the tool on a phone means that inspiration can be captured at any time and from anything - even a source that appears to be colorless.Creating color themes in a fun and engaging way allows everyone the freedom to explore and interact with the world around them with new eyes. Kuler's purpose is to facilitate access to the inspirational nature of color, and bring joy to its users as they explore the colorful world around them.

When developing SquareTalk, our goal was to explore ways that we could use tacit technologies to foster a sense of connectedness between strangers at large-scale festival events.

Bo.by is an interactive system that enables bonding between premature babies in incubators with parents, in situations where normally it would be impossible. A device for parents, and a mattress for an infant, are connected and collect, send and receive data such as touch, breast movement, vibration, heartbeat or body heat, enable to feel the touch of one another. This two-way communication, enriched with senses, offers the possibility to experience a natural, prolonged skin-to-skin bonding.
