One of the most wholesome fabulous projects in the world in the last decade has been a startup in Nairobi, Kenya. They are exemplars not only in the global digital community but particularly for the African design community in showing them what's possible to have big, hairy, audacious goals.

Play is a free, explorative and iterative process to discover new meaning and is an important element for innovation. For children, it is unstructured, free and open-ended play through which they can develop their own creativity and interests. However, parents are increasingly underestimating the value of play while prioritising more structured activities and academic performance, a trend which is causing an increase in mental health issues in today’s youth.

Programming is intimidating. Common programming stereotypes involve sitting at a computer looking at lines of dense symbols and code. This perception discourages people, particularly children, from learning programming.Dr. Wagon dispels these impressions and facilitates a new way to learn programming that is interactive and concrete. Dr. Wagon was designed for children ages 6-12, and is intended to provide children with a playful and more accessible introduction to computer programming.

Oasis is a smartphone application for mental support through digital mindtrip. It designs to support individuals in recovering from traumas, creating new connections, and boosting their mental health. It simulated a trip from the desert to an oasis. Daily challenges must be completed by the users in order to advance toward the oasis. The users of this journey not only experience changes in their own mindset, but also the community’s support. Every day’s challenge will be recorded, to witness user’s journey and effort during the days. It will automatically be generated into a personalized diary. Users can view the diary and share them with the community. As time goes by, users will find more and more smiles in their Oasis Diary.

Midas is an accessible gaming controller which can turn any object or surface touched into a control interface. Designed to improve the gaming experience for people living with Muscular Dystrophy (MD), Midas acknowledges the lack of inclusive gaming hardware for people living with musculoskeletal disabilities. It challenges the idea of a traditional controller by proposing a solution which caters to an individual’s experience of MD, unique even within a similar diagnosis.

Bridge is a platform that exposes people to a wide range of political perspectives and enables one-on-one discussion between users. This project began when I started taking a closer look at my social media feed and became all too familiar with the toxic dialogue that often surrounded politics. It felt like we hid behind our screens and used our online presence to talk to each other in ways we never would in person. In addition, I became more and more aware of the recommendation algorithms that curated my social media feed and pushed me to only encounter political content I already agreed with. It was clear that social media was pushing people into their own echo chambers and becoming a vector for extremely polarized and toxic political discourse.

There are an estimated 285 million vision-impaired people worldwide. Sadly, the consequences of sight loss are often poverty, isolation, and depression. Of the estimated two million people living with sight loss in the UK, almost half say they would like to leave their homes more often.

Our inspiration for the Little People™ Apptivity™ Barnyard came from watching young children play with apps and toys. They didn’t view the world as “digital” vs. “physical” but rather moved fluidly between both modalities and even used them together. We therefore set out to reinvent our classic farm playset to reflect how children naturally want to play. The Little People Apptivity Barnyard represents a new level of interactivity, where the app and toy are fully integrated and augment each other. The app provides a rich, living world while the conductive playset and figures provide a new, tangible way to explore this world. Everything works with everything else, just as children expect!

Finavia is one of the most prominent organizations in the aviation industry of Finland. We run airports all across Finland and aim for creating an integrated and smooth passenger experience. With this website renewal project, our goal was to establish the website as the key digital touchpoint that would help align all our digital touchpoints to our vision of smooth traveling by providing the passenger control over their experience, and journey.

When developing SquareTalk, our goal was to explore ways that we could use tacit technologies to foster a sense of connectedness between strangers at large-scale festival events.
