Project description

Fiiiit helps track, analyze, and share people's activities while taking the stairs. It helps people gain health by doing exercise more, and reduce carbon footprint by taking elevators less. You swipe a RFID card on devices at both floor A and B, then you'll get instant exercise feedback, such as calorie consumption, exercise duration, or whether you have moved too fast. You can set exercise goals and achieve it, or compete virtually with your families, friends, colleagues inside the same building.Your exercise data will be sent to our server, so you can review your workout records, manage your future exercises, or share your achievements with others.Fiiiit is now a full functional prototype that has already been deployed inside the library of Beijing Sport University. And we are doing our best to make the final product much more smaller, and much more user friendly.

Context

To solve the problem that office workers in China tend to sit all day without doing enough exercise. The team has been exploring a way for people to use existing resources inside buildings to do simple and easy-to-repeat exercises.

We chose stairs in the end. Because every building has stairs, and everybody knows how to climb stairs. Besides gym, staircase could become the second best place to do indoor exercises.

The biggest challenge we face is how to make climbing stairs more attractive compare to taking elevator. Our solution contains two stages. Stage one is to provide instant exercise feedback when people using stairs. So that the exercise experience can be unique and fun. Stage two is to give people manageability to their exercises online. So people will know how those small exercises can be meaningful to both their health, and the environment.

We believe people’s behavior will be largely affected by other people around. So we tried to make everyone’s exercise more connected rather than separated. People inside the same building can chase the same goal on the website, and stimulate each other by making contribution to the whole community.

Impact

Taking small exercises multiple times a day can be more beneficial than just do one big workout each day for office workers. Fiiiit can give life to staircases, which exist in almost all office buildings, turns them into gyms that opens 24/7, and free of charge. Beside gym, office workers will have one more choice to do exercise and gain health.

For a typical 20 – 30 office building, elevators will take about 1/8 of its total electricity usage. Since Fiiiit encourages people to use stairs, electricity consumption will be reduced.

Climbing stairs can burn calories four times faster than running. It is actually a very good way to do aerobic exercise training. Since Fiiiit has features like goal setting, overspeed alarming, etc. People who are serious about aerobic training can use Fiiiit as a great tool to manage their exercises.

Craft

The design of the device, is actually the design of how exercise information will be displayed. This concept eventually affects many design and engineering decisions.

We choose LED dot matrix screen due to its great readability under direct sunlight, and super fast response speed. Pixel size was selected base on how far will people read the screen, and what will be shown on it. We use white screen because it won’t left an ugly “black hole” on the wall when the display is off. And we use icons and animation to display key exercise feedback only. This will make the information much easier to be read and understood.

In order to let people get exercise feedback immediately after swiping card. The device was engineered in a more complex way, so that user won’t feel any delay even if the internet connectivity is poor. Waiting time between swiping card and start displaying is less than 0.2 second.

Both screen and RFID reader was set at the right height, so that using the product won’t affect too much of people’s normal walking behavior. This makes the overall experience more intuitive.
