MusicTongue is a tongue-training game App designed for middle-aged and elderly people. The purpose of the training is to retard the decline of mouth function, reduce the risk of choking and improve the quality of life of the elderly. The game can be played on phone or tablets, and through image recognition technology, the game can identify whether the player’s current mouth movements are correct through the front camera; the movements during training are designed by nursing experts according to the《Dysphagia Care Manual》of the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan; the rules of MusicTongue are similar to “Just Dance”, players will do the training action with the music. After the game is finished players will be able to check the leaderboard and view their exercise records on the main screen. From the reaction time and correct movement rate, elders can see if they have improved.

The way music theory is traditionally taught makes it seem intimidating and complex. This is essentially what Musiclock seeks to change and disrupt.

Being a milkman has changed very little over 100 years. Operating as independent traders, customer orders are still communicated through paper notes on doormats and cash is still collected door-to- door in an ad-hoc manner. It’s labour intensive, low-tech and until now, very inefficient.

Nail art has exploded into mainstream demand due to social sharing – its one of the top 5 most shared items on Instagram and Pinterest with 8.5 billion dollars a year spent on nails. Yet keeping up with this trend can challenging. A basic salon manicure averages $20, but custom art on each finger can cost more than $50. DIY techniques are cheaper but they’re messy and require lots of skill, materials, and steady hands. Off-the-shelf nail wraps offer convenience but they eliminate the opportunity for creative self expression. So for most women, personalized nail art is an aspiration rather than reality – until now.

In established professional sports, technology often seems like an afterthought, applied like a band-aid, forgotten entirely, or employed in unimaginative ways. Early this April, a start-up league called the National Pro Grid League approached Cooper with a new challenge – to help them introduce a new sport that has integrated technology from the start. Cooper has been worked closely with the NPGL to design the fan experience, through interactive tools, infographics and Jumbotron graphics.

Traveling and exploring unfamiliar places is an exciting experience for most sighted people. However, for the visually impaired and blind people, this experience is often more frustrating and mentally demanding than enjoyable. They rely on tools informing them about their immediate surroundings and the other senses to grasp their environment. Nebula is an interactive belt that supports unfamiliar urban exploration for people with visual impairment. The belt translates navigational data into haptic sensation, allowing users to explore without constantly figuring out where they are going or from where they come. Nebula minimizes the fear of getting lost and relieves mental strain by creating a haptic breadcrumb trail to ensure the wearer always gets home. Nebula encourages exploration while allowing the wearer to immerse in the experience and enjoy the journey.

Nest thermostat users were invited to take part in an initiative that would champion clean energy during a critical moment – when the path of the eclipse would darken over 100 million solar panels, creating a temporary dip in the clean energy supply. And they were invited to participate directly from the screen of their Nest thermostat. They tapped “Count me in” to opt-in right from there, as well. Their thermostat got to work pre-cooling their homes in advance. Nest thermostats have long been heralded for their innovation, on this day they were also able to make championing clean energy, a simple and easy choice.

Airline meals have remained largely unchanged for decades. A 10cm cube is about to rewrite the rulebook – and give new meaning to the phrase “a square meal.” No longer will passengers be stuck behind the pull-down tray, unable to use their laptop, or get up to stretch their legs – and no longer will they be faced with a meal that feels uninspired. The Cube is at the center of SAS’ new onboard dining ­experience for short- and medium-haul flights – and it delivers what customers want, in a modern and practical way.

Based on the core athletic criteria of Speed, Power, Agility, Reaction, and Quickness, the SPARQ Combine event is where players are tested, analyzed, and ultimately for the elite few, awarded scholarships. But up until recently, the drill events were only about the numbers they could put up on a stopwatch. Nike asked us to bring SPARQ to the modern age. This year, through digital diagnostic tools, high school players now have a complete picture of their performance and a plan for improvement.

Nike+ was an experiment that revolutionized sport. With its launch seven years ago, we started a journey with Nike that has taken them from a company that manufactures shoes and apparel, to a company that makes products and services.Nike+ tapped into a community of runners with an existing behavior. Elite runners use the Nike+ platform to track their runs. We created a functional platform for athletes who wanted to understand their performance and improve on it. But even though Nike+ was a phenomenon for athletes worldwide, it wasn't optimizing its audience.We saw a greater opportunity in bringing performance tracking to the masses. But the question was: How do we bring Nike+ to a larger audience? How do we get people to adopt a new behavior?In order to bring Nike+ to the masses, we didn't just launch a new productwe transformed the way people measure performance by introducing a new metric called Nike Fuel. For the first time, the Nike+ FuelBand lets anyone who's active to compare themselves with anyone else.

Nouvelle réalité (New reality in French) is a physico-digital exploration project, it is a gateway between physical and digital worlds, aiming to generate artistic interest in children. The augmented reality gaming app reveals artwork from Lego assemblies built by the children. In this first experiment, we explore the De Stijl art movement through three unique art pieces.

Nova is a personal climbing wall that redefines bouldering training at home, making it a celebrated activity through a new take on design expression and a compelling interactive interface. Instead of colored holds usually found on regular training walls, Nova uses light to flexibly indicate a variety of climbing routes and difficulty levels. Users can select a route using their iPhone. Information about the training performance is used to offer personalized training. Nova is practical smart gear for climbing and offers various routes for training. When not in use the climbing wall makes use of lighting to create a modern ambience. Thus the design took into consideration two possible scenarios: training and ambient lighting while not in use. The wall consists of panels with pattern-cut-outs that can be scaled to fit different sizes of rooms and dedicated walls. The new experience proudly reflects the user's passion for their sport and lifestyle.

Our service provides the power of a knowledge, that is currently only available to people who can afford the time and money to regularly visit a nutritionist and conduct regular blood tests.

How might we use sound to guide visually impaired parents through the bottle-feeding process and make them more independent in raising their children? For blind or visually impaired parents preparing a baby bottle is one of the hardest things to do. For preparing these bottles most of these parents rely on the help of others.

Oasis is a smartphone application for mental support through digital mindtrip. It designs to support individuals in recovering from traumas, creating new connections, and boosting their mental health. It simulated a trip from the desert to an oasis. Daily challenges must be completed by the users in order to advance toward the oasis. The users of this journey not only experience changes in their own mindset, but also the community’s support. Every day’s challenge will be recorded, to witness user’s journey and effort during the days. It will automatically be generated into a personalized diary. Users can view the diary and share them with the community. As time goes by, users will find more and more smiles in their Oasis Diary.

thirteen23 was approached to design and develop the mobile strategy for Barack Obama's 2012 bid for re-election. Working with Obama for America, the team crafted an ambitious set of mobile applications designed to support Obama's large base of campaign volunteers and grassroots supporters. Instead of creating a simple brochure application outlining the President's policies, the team focused on creating a real-time mobile solution to aid campaign organizers and volunteers working in the field.

With several products and routines, living with asthma can be a constant daily challenge. Otto creates one seamless experience and redefines the asthma treatment process.

280 million people worldwide have diabetes causing 4 million deaths each year. With no cure on the horizon, daily self-management is the only option for sufferers to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Blood glucose levels must be tested several times a day and insulin dosage adjusted accordingly. While the technology to monitor blood glucose is improving, the cognitive and physical abilities of the (mostly older) patient group still present a major challenge. "For my patients who require insulin, the steps involved in the self-care of their diabetes can be complicated and overwhelming" -Diabetes Nurse (SanFrancisco) It often falls to nurses to overcome these usability obstacles - spending valuable consultation time training patients to use these devices instead of focusing on more important healthcare issues to prevent complications, e.g. blindness and amputations. In less developed healthcare systems, patients rarely get any training-leaving them frustrated by complex technology, procedures, and instructions that prevent them from effectively managing their diabetes, increasing their health risks. Roche Diabetes Care commissioned Frontend to analyze this issue. What are the usability barriers for patients and nurses? How could the process be simplified? How can we empower patients to manage their diabetes? How can we help nurses optimize training?

Out of the Box is a simple yet effective solution for the increasing number of cell-phone users who have difficulties with learning to use a new smartphone. For older people, this experience can be particularly frustrating as they apply analogue modes of learning to digital experiences - looking in the box for help that simply is not there. Rather than design a dumbed down “special phone”, the designers decided to look at the problem in a different way. Instead of designing another device, they looked at changing the way people learn to use them. By drawing on user strengths and familiar mental models, the designers created a set of books which would act as the packaging and provide an entire learning experience for any device. The books actually contain the phone, and use each page turn to reveal the elements of the phone in the right order, helping the user to set up the sim card, battery and even slide the case onto the phone. The phone then slots into the book, which acts as the main manual. Arrows point to the exact locations the user should press, avoiding confusion and eliminating the feeling of being lost in a menu.

But for a child, that’s not actually true, everything has to be discovered from the start. Today, urban children are spending time indoors more than ever before. Parents and educators are concerned that young children are not using their senses actively and don’t have enough possibilities for explorative learning. Current play experiences invite children to look at new, fictional worlds, which causes them to stop using their wild imaginations. With this project I wanted to ask, instead of providing new things for children to look at, what if we could equip the children with new ways to see and explore the world with?

Children love to solve mysteries and to play detective by tracking down hidden objects. PIIQ is an interactive DIY scavenger hunt kit that encourages children (6-8 years) to work together. It contains detective tools for role play, set of themes to build up on and design their own scavenger hunt and blank clue cards to add curiosity. Each child plays a different role in one team and they need to use their respective tools for unlocking the boxes to get to the next clue. By working together, children not only learn how to solve problems and communicate but also work on rebuilding their confidence around social skills and restoring their sense of community through meaningful and collaborative moments.

Pas a Pas is an interactive educational tool that enables children to learn and experiment through animation. It is designed to support and integrate in to an existing curriculum and is not meant to alter the natural learning pace of children. Pas a Pas incorporates physicality and the animated outcome of stop motion animation to bridge the gap between abstract concepts from maths, physics or arts - usually represented by graphs, equations or words - and reality. Pas a Pas contributes to an education that integrates 'play' and 'create' in to the learning process.Due to the inherent tangibility of stop motion animation, the concept fits into Montessori education methods - it is aligned with the idea of self-directed learning, indirect teaching and multi-age grouping.

Peer is a Mixed Reality platform that uses a combination of physical and digital elements to engage students by making abstract concepts and complex forces visible and tangible. Traditional education relies on textbooks, videos, memorization, testing, and instruction in order to teach students about “hard to see” and “invisible” science topics. Although this method of teaching was successful in the past, new teaching methods like S.T.E.A.M. and maker education are making impact in the classroom by changing the way students learn—by doing.

Across the globe, User Experience (UX) Research teams invest months in user interviews and weeks in crafting a set of Personas. A User Persona, is a detailed and semi-fictional representation of a target user, based on research and insights. Yet, these Personas often fall short of their intended impact on UX and products. We embarked on a mission to enhance Personas, ensuring they deliver their true value in understanding users and facilitating exceptional user experiences. After numerous iterations, we developed the Persona Mapper—a tool designed to revitalize Personas.

From coffee shops to workspaces, we gather around other people—who we may or may not know—as much for the atmosphere as for any specific conversation, collaboration, or task. Increasingly, we are occupied by a myriad of devices that connect us to others beyond the physical space we occupy. This immediately disconnects us from those in the here and now. Personal Billboard is a design exploration that engages people to interact and express who they are to those in the same proximity using a dual-screen laptop (a laptop that has an additional screen on the cover of the device).We believe there is an opportunity to create connections between people in the same physical space through digital expressions on a dual-screen laptop. We developed a Windows 8 app that lets people quickly post text and images to the external-facing screen of the laptop. Other people in the same proximity can interact with that content digitally (by “liking”, voting on, or getting a copy of displayed content), or they can begin a conversation that wouldn’t have otherwise happened without Personal Billboard. This project redefines what it means to be social with a digital device.

Philips Pediatric Coaching is a holistic coaching solution to prepare and guide children (ages 4 to 8) for an MRI scan. It consists of a gamified mobile app to prepare children at home; an educational toy scanner to prepare kids in the waiting room; and guidance in the bore of the MRI scanner. All solution elements feature the same buddy characters (Ollie & friends) & design elements, as well as the same voice, so kids are consistently guided from home to the scanner. The app has been co-created with clinical experts and psychologists and features educational videos, interactive games, information for parents, and an Augmented Reality-experience.

The aim of this project was to create a musical instrument inspired by nature and biomimicry adapted to people with disabilities. To do this, we were inspired by the spotted woodpecker and its drumming, which allowed us to experiment with the resonance of wood. We wanted to offer a fun, sound and visual experience to users.

Human trafficking affects 20-30 million victims worldwide. Over 70% of these are women who are forced to work in factories, farms, homes, and brothels around the world. In the United States, hundreds of thousands of minors are considered to be at-risk for commercial sexual exploitation. Victims are rarely “rescued” from trafficking. Most survivors extricate themselves, and are immediately dependent on a variety of support services for housing, medical attention, and emotional care.

Planet Word is a new museum dedicated to words and language, housed inside the landmark Franklin School in downtown Washington DC. As the world’s first voice-activated museum, it is the most ambitiously interactive museum for the humanities. Planet Word founder Ann Friedman ruminated on the shape of the museum for five years before selecting Local Projects as design partner, but one aspect of her vision was clear from the beginning—innovative, meaningful interaction would be the most important design consideration.
